Pets rescued from neglect up for adoption

Dogs and cats rescued earlier this month from a Pacific Grove home where they were subject to neglect and inhumane treatment are now available for adoption at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for Monterey County, an SPCA spokeswoman said today.

In all, 14 dogs, four young puppies and four cats were rescued on May 7 from a home that Pacific Grove fire officials said was so filled with feces and urine that the toxic stench of ammonia made it difficult for humane officers to breath and caused their eyes to burn.

Some doors had to be forced open by rescuers because deep piles of feces and garbage blocked them, officials said.

Seven of the rescued dogs and one cat are now available for adoption and more will be available soon, SPCA spokeswoman Beth Brookhouser said.

Brookhouser added that adopters must agree to make the pet or information about the pet available if it is needed for a potential criminal court case. The case has been submitted to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of multiple counts of animal neglect against the homeowner.

The homeowner’s name has not yet been released.

The home, which is designated a historic site by the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, has been declared uninhabitable.
