CONCACAF fined Mexican side Toluca $5,000 Tuesday for taping a San Jose Earthquakes training session before the two sides met for their second-leg Champions League Quarterfinal tie in Mexico.
The professional soccer federation officially announced that the Liga MX side is being penalized for infringement of the CONCACAF Champions League media guidelines and breach the FIFA Disciplinary Code for “unsporting behavior and Fair Play.”
The disciplinary committee made their decision on Tuesday after San Jose filed an official complaint March 18.
The Earthquakes claim a Toluca employee taped their practice past the allotted time granted for media access. The cameraman did not have authorization to film the closed session.
San Jose would go on to lose the second-leg fixture at the Estadio Nemesio Díez, going down 5-4 in penalties after pushing a 1-1 draw through extra time. The loss eliminated the Earthquakes from CCL play as Toluca moved on to the semifinals.
According to CONCACAF, in accordance with article 6.5 of the CONCACAF Champions League regulations, the decision is not subject to appeal.
