The Raiders were unable to meet with DeSean Jackson —currently in Washington — but they didn’t want to lay down on their hunt for quality players.
Instead, they signed former 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers.
Rogers, 33 in July, played three seasons in San Francisco and started in all 48 regular season games.
Recording nine interceptions during that period, the six-foot-tall former Pro Bowler was a defensive catalyst during the 49ers turnaround season in 2011, totaling six interceptions and one for a touchdown.
Despite being cut by the 49ers — a perceived cap casualty — Rogers isn’t mad, he says he just wants to win:
“It’s going to be fun. We (Rogers and Tarell Brown) bring leadership and experience. We helped turn the 49ers defense around and maybe that translates over here to the Raiders.”
Rogers has played the outside for the majority of his career, but has moved into the slot quite a bit since the 2012 season. He said that’d be his primary role in Oakland, leaving Brown and DJ Hayden to man the corners.
Rogers has a major opportunity to finish his career on a strong note, or equally flame out, while facing the pass-happy offenses that the AFC West harbors.
During the 2013 season, Oakland finished with only nine interceptions to a staggering 33 touchdowns allowed. The new season also brings another set of starting corners, Oakland has not had the same set of corners since general manager Reggie McKenzie arrived.
