Three-alarm fire scorches Contra Costa hills

A three-alarm fire blazed dangerously close to a power plant in Pittsburg before being contained Thursday, fire officials said.

The Contra Costa Fire Protection District has requested an approximate 64 percent increase to developer-paid fire facility fees in order to keep up with the district's "overextended condition." County supervisors are expected to vote on the fee increase July 23, 2019 in Martinez, Calif.more

The fire burned 35 to 40 acres near the intersection of Willow Pass Road and West 10th Street. Reported around 3:15 p.m., fire crews remained on scene mopping up for several hours, according to a Contra Costa County fire dispatcher.

The fire charred roughly 40 acres of grass, brush and trees according to fire Capt. Robert Marshall. A few power lines connected to the nearby NRG Energy natural gas power plant were threatened, but no structures were threatened and injuries were reported.

A CalFire helicopter dropped mud on the fire. Contra Costa Fire Inspector George Laing told  “particularly difficult” because of its marshland location.
