OAKLAND — The fans have spoken: Stephen Curry is an All-Star.
The Golden State Warriors guard has been named a starter on the NBA Western Conference All-Star team, the league announced today.
A first-time All-Star and the first Warriors player to be voted in by the fans as an All-Star starter since Latrell Sprewell in 1995, Curry pulled in the most votes of any Western Conference backcourt player with 1,047,281 votes.
Immediately after the announcement, Curry took to Twitter, posting a video of himself thanking his fans for sending him to the All-Star game in New Orleans.
Curry told SFBay that getting to the fans first and thanking them was the most important thing in that moment:
“Over a million votes that’s crazy. So I’ve got to thank the fans and show them some love cause this is all because of them.”
Curry said within 45 minutes of the announcement he had 40 to 50 phone calls and texts from friends and family. But talking to his dad — former NBA player Dell Curry — was special:
“He’s not an emotional guy and when I called him I could tell his voice was shaky. I could just tell how proud he was … he was more emotional than I’ve ever heard him.”
After missing 40 games two years ago, Curry set the NBA single-season record with 272 three-pointers made in the 2012-2013 season, and is currently playing his best basketball. He said going from one extreme to the other has been a blessing and a surreal experience.
Curry, 25, is averaging career-highs of 23.5 points, 9.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds to go with 1.88 steals and 37.9 minutes in 40 games this season.
The fifth-year point guard leads the NBA in 20-point/10-assist games with 11, including a league-leading five games in which he’s tallied at least 30 points and 10 assists.
Last year, Curry didn’t even receive a nod from the coaches to be an All-Star reserve, a moment not forgotten by team mate Harrison Barnes on Twitter:
“Congrats to @StephenCurry30!!! Snubbed last year to STARTING this year. #welldeserved.”
