The 49ers announced Friday that wide receiver Mario Manningham has been placed on Injured Reserve for the second straight season.
Manningham, 27, began the year on the Physically Unable to Perform List after finishing 2012 on IR with a torn ACL and PCL.
He was activated to the 53-man roster on November 4 and played in six games making three starts. He recorded just nine receptions for 85 yards.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh didn’t give much detail concerning Manningham’s injury at Friday’s press conference:
“He’s consulting with doctors. We’ll do what’s in the best interest of his career. He’s got input on that. It’s really a conversation between doctors and Mario at this point.”
When asked if it was residual from last year’s injury, Harbaugh said:
“For me to talk about it, I’m not a doctor. To tell you what level of last year or this year, if it’s something different. The doctors and Mario are the people to talk to about that.”
Manningham signed a two-year, $7.3 million deal with the 49ers in March 2012, but has played in only 18 games totaling 51 receptions for 534 yards and one touchdown.
From 2008-2011, Manningham was a key target for Eli Manning, helping the New York Giants win Super Bowl XLVI.
Manningham is a free agent at the end of the season. It’s hard to imagine the 49ers re-signing him considering his knee problems and low production. Bringing back Anquan Boldin is a far bigger priority.
In the meantime, rookie wideout Quinton Patton has stepped in for Manningham as the No. 3 receiver.
