School worker accused of sexual affair with boy

A 29-year-old employee of an East Bay Catholic school is behind bars after police say she had a ongoing “sexual relationship” with a young boy at the school.

Mia Cummings, an after-school program assistant at All Saints Catholic School in Hayward, has been in custody since she was arrested Nov. 26.

In waiting nearly two weeks to announce her arrest, Hayward police spokesman Sgt. Ken Forkus said word of the case was withheld while investigators tried to determine if there were any other possible victims.

Forkus said Monday:

“At this time we have no indication that Cummings victimized any other children.”

Forkus says the sexual relationship between Cummings and the boy — who is now 14 years old — started when he was 12.  The boy was a student at the school. His name is being withheld.

Police started investigating Cummings after receiving information from a person Forkus described as a “state mandated reporter.”

Forkus could not reveal the name of the person, but said the reporting person was a member of a medical staff at a local hospital who was required by law to report the alleged abuse.

Officials at All Saints Catholic School — described on its website as a “parish Transitional Kindergarten-8 school” — referred questions about the arrest of Cummings to the Diocese of Oakland.

Diocese spokesman Mike Brown told SFBay that school officials had “fully cooperated” with the police investigation.

Brown says Cummings — who had worked at the school since September of 2005 — has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Cummings is being held in lieu of $800,000 bail after being arraigned on eight felony counts, including lewd acts with a child.

After making an initial court appearance, she is due back in court on Jan. 7 when she is expected to enter a plea.
