Not surprisingly, Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline passed with the 49ers making no deals.
The team had been shopping cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, wide receiver Jon Baldwin and running back Anthony Dixon while reportedly inquiring about acquiring Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon.
Other possible trade bait included San Francisco’s four seventh-round picks in the 2014 draft along with two second-rounders, one of which comes courtesy of traded quarterback Alex Smith, who has led the Chiefs to an undefeated 8-0 record.
But deals at the trade deadline are not as common in the NFL as they are in the MLB, NHL or even NBA.
And, the 49ers expect to get more help in coming weeks from players coming off their own reserve lists rather than from another team’s roster.
Just two hours after head coach Jim Harbaugh’s noon media session Tuesday, rookie defensive lineman Tank Carradine — a second-round pick — was activated to the 53-man roster from the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list.
Carradine began practicing on Oct. 15 after being medically cleared of any ACL concerns. He was probable first-rounder had he not suffered a knee injury his senior year at Florida State where he recorded 16.5 sacks in just two seasons.
The 6-foot-4, 273-pound edge rusher is expected to help boost the pass rush that yielded no sacks or hits on Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne in Sunday’s 42-10 win in London.
When in full form, Carradine is a headache for right tackles.
To clear a space for Carradine the 49ers waived linebacker Jermaine Cunningham — a second-round pick by the Patriots in 2011 — who had been inactive since signing with the team on Oct. 1.
On Wednesday, the team waived wide receiver Marlon Moore who caught a six-yard pass and rushed one time for nine yards in six games.
The 49ers expect wide receiver Mario Manningham, cornerback Eric Wright, rookie linebacker Nick Moody, wide receiver Michael Crabtree, and linebacker Aldon Smith to be elevated to the active roster next month. Rookie nose tackle Quinton Dial was activated two weeks ago amid injuries to the defensive line.
San Francisco has a bye this week. They next host the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 10.
