SANTA CLARA — Another life has been lost at Levi’s Stadium, the future home of the San Francisco 49ers.
The medical examiner identified 60-year-old Edward Erving Lake Jr. of Vacaville as the worker who was killed Monday morning at 6:45 a.m. according to Cal/OSHA, the state’s workplace watchdog.
The victim — a delivery truck driver for subcontractor Gerdau Ameristeel — died after a bundle of rebar fell on him Cal/OSHA spokesman Peter Melton said.
Stadium contractor Turner/Devcon issued a statement about the accident:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that the driver has passed away as a result of his injuries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this very difficult time.”
Work has been stopped for the day while authorities from the Santa Clara Police and Fire Departments and Cal/OSHA investigate. Construction resumes on Tuesday.
The 49ers also released a statement shortly after hearing about the fatality:
“The 49ers organization learned this morning that an accident occurred involving a driver as he delivered materials to the stadium. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy.”
This is the second work-related death at the construction site. In June, 63-year-old Donald White was killed when he was struck by an elevator counterweight.
