49ers re-sign Osgood, put aside injured Moody

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers continued to tweak their roster this week in preparation for Sunday’s matchup with the Seahawks.

The team re-signed three-time Pro Bowl special teamer Kassim Osgood who was cut on Aug. 31., and placed rookie linebacker Nick Moody on on the Injured Reserve/Designated for Return List.

Moody — a sixth-round pick — will not be eligible to practice with the team for at least six weeks and cannot be activated until eight weeks have passed. The 49ers are using their only IR-Recall tag on Moody.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh said at Wednesday’s press conference Moody is expected to miss seven games after breaking his right hand in the home opener against the Packers, but will not require surgery. This means the earliest Moody will be back on the field is Week 10 against Carolina.

Osgood, 33, resumes his role as a special teams ace and becomes the teams’ seventh wide receiver. He’s made 122 tackles and 44 receptions in a 10-year career. He was issued No. 14 after wearing No. 13 during training camp and preseason.

The business side of the NFL is also evident with today’s move, as Osgood was guaranteed a $940,000 salary if he made the initial 53-man roster, but will now need to earn his pay at $55,295 per week that he’s a 49er.

Meanwhile Moody becomes the seventh rookie to land on the 49ers’ reserve lists, enabling San Francisco to stash and keep an impressive amount of young talent.
