SANTA CLARA — The 49ers made a pair of roster moves Tuesday involving their two-way players.
The team activated defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs — also a blocking tight end and one of their top special teams players — who served a one-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
To clear a roster spot for Dobbs, the team waived injured the versatile Will Tukuafu. The 29-year-old was entering his third year with San Francisco as a defensive lineman, fullback, and wedge blocker on special teams, recording seven tackles in 14 games in 2012 and appearing in all three playoff games.
His 2011 season was cut short by a wrist-injury and he spent 2010 on the practice squad, receiving the 49ers’ Thomas Herrion Award for turning his football dream into a reality.
Tukuafu went on a three-year religious mission out of high school before returning to junior college and later graduating from Oregon. Seattle originally signed him as an undrafted rookie in 2010.
Dobbs returns to a deep defensive line that includes: Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Ian Williams, Glenn Dorsey, and Tony Jerod-Eddie.
Nose tackle Michael Purcell is on the practice squad, and the team expects to have the services of draft picks defensive tackles Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial sometime after Week 6.
