49ers begin final prep for home opener

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers resumed practice for the first time since the Aug. 31 roster cuts and began preparing for their season opener against Green Bay on Sunday.

Rookie defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye was placed on injured reserve with a knee sprain, while the 49ers reached an injury settlement with nose tackle Lamar Divens who is now free to sign with another team.

Tight end Derek Carrier (6-4, 241) was signed to the practice squad, becoming its eighth member.

The 23-year-old tweener was in Raiders camp last year before spending the season on the Eagles practice squad. He was cut by Philadelphia on Aug. 25.

The versatile Carrier was a record setting wide receiver at Division III Beloit College in Wisconsin where he ran track and was also a shooting guard on the basketball team for two years averaging 8.3 points. He has 4.5 speed and a 38-inch vertical.

Ex-Cardinals quarterback John Skelton also worked out for the 49ers three days after being released by Cincinnati. The 25-year-old has an 8-9 record in 17 career starts with Arizona.

The 6-6, 244-pounder has a very strong arm and 4.8 speed, but also owns a 63.0 passer rating.

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has been issued uniform No. 28 after running back Anthony Dixon refused to sell his No. 24 to Asomugha, who has worn the number his entire pro career.

Asomugha offered Dixon $24,000 to have it back, according to CSN Bay Area.

Multiple reports also surfaced that linebacker Aldon Smith and ex-49er tight end Delanie Walker — now with Tennessee — have been named in a civil suit by a man who says he was shot at the June 2012 party at Smith’s San Jose home during which the two players allegedly fired illegally possessed weapons into the air forcing visitors to leave.

This is the same party at which Smith received stab wounds.

As with all legal proceedings, the 49ers are likely to remain mum about the incident.
