Two defensive linemen waived injured by the 49ers last week now know their football futures for 2013.
On Tuesday, the 49ers reached an injury settlement with four-year veteran Lamar Divens (undisclosed) while allowing undrafted rookie Lawrence Okoye (sprained knee) to revert to injured reserve.
Divens, 27, is free to sign with any team that may be interested. He’s recorded no stats since entering the league in 2008, mainly being used a camp body or practice squad addition.
He made headlines this off-season after being brutally assaulted by teammate Ahmad Brooks after a night of drinking. No charges were filed, but the NFL is still reviewing the case.
He did not dress for the 49ers-Vikings preseason game on Aug. 25 in which Okoye hurt his knee.
In a sense the injury worked to Okoye’s advantage as it’s enabled the former Olympian and self professed “bad football player” to remain with the team.
The 21-year-old Okoye is not eligible to practice, but will still get a football education by observing, reviewing film, and continuing to work with defensive line coach Jim Tomsula.
The 49ers travel to Okoye’s hometown of London in Week Eight to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 27.
