SANTA CLARA — As other teams snatched up the 49ers castoffs, San Francisco’s front office was busy this weekend filling seven of eight spots on their practice squad.
It’s evident that the 49ers had the best class of cut players as many were claimed off the wire or signed.
Quarterback Scott Tolzien signed on to the Packers’ practice squad, notable because he knows the 49ers’ playbook and the two teams square off on Sunday.
Seventh-round pick cornerback Marcus Cooper and veteran wide receiver Chad Hall are heading to Kansas City while rookie tight end MarQueis Gray is Cleveland bound.
Wide receiver Ricardo Lockette has joined the Bears practice squad, and 2012 sixth-rounder safety Trenton Robinson has agreed to join the Eagles practice squad.
On the 49ers practice squad, five rookies — seventh-round pick tackle Carter Bykowski, offensive lineman Patrick Omameh, wide receiver Chuck Jacobs, cornerback Darryl Morris, and nose tackle Michael Purcell — join a pair of second-year players — running back Jewell Hampton and safety Michael Thomas.
Offensively, Bykowski and Omameh are raw and will serve as scout team linemen while Hampton was the 49ers leading rusher this preseason. Jacobs’ skill set, meanwhile, resembles Brandon Lloyd’s minus any attitude.
Defensively, the speedy Morris is roster-ready anytime and was a training camp standout. Purcell was a beast against the run and got good penetration recording eight tackles, one sack, and one pass defensed, while Thomas may have won himself a job with four solid tackles against the Chargers.
The last vacant practice squad spot is likely to be filled on Monday.
Saturday, the 49ers reportedly worked out versatile fullback Owen Marecic. If signed, someone will need to be cut from the current 53-man roster to make room for the Harbaugh favorite.
Right now the 49ers are carrying 10 linebackers. Given Marecic’s ability to contribute on offense and special teams, middle linebacker Nate Stupar may be the guy — presuming he clears waivers — that gets moved to the practice squad if Marecic is signed.
The 49ers may also be looking at a blocking tight end or additional help in the secondary leading up to the resumption of practice on Tuesday.
