Okoye looks headed for IR as 49ers cut down

SANTA CLARA — There were no real surprises Tuesday as the 49ers had a busy day of roster moves to cut their roster to 75 players.

The team began by officially announcing the trade of outside linebacker Parys Haralson to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2014.

Waived injured was former British Olympic discus hurdler Lawrence Okoye, who suffered a knee sprain Sunday against the Vikings and was noticeably limping in the locker room. Expect Okoye to be placed on IR — thus, his football journey isn’t over, it’s just beginning.

Rookies defensive tackle Tank Carradine, defensive tackle Quinton Dial, running back Marcus Lattimore, tackle Luke Marquardt, and veteran cornerback Eric Wright on the non-football injury list. Wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham were placed on the physically unable to perform list.

No timetable exists for the debut for any of the four rookies, but Crabtree is expected back sometime late in the season. Manningham could possibly return by mid-season.

None of the players on these lists count against the active roster and are not eligible to practice until after the completion of all Week Six games.

Tuesday, Wright notably reported to practice for the first time since being signed earlier this month as he was dealing with a personal matter. He worked out on the side field.

Last years’ No. 3 corner Chris Culliver was officially put on injured reserve with a torn ACL, while the Turk found defensive tackle Lamar Divens as he, like Okoye, was waived Tuesday with an undisclosed injury.

San Francisco’s final move of the day was re-signing linebacker Joe Holland. Also cut Monday along with quarterback Scott Tolzien were tackle Al Netter, running back D.J. Harper, and punter/kicker Colton Schmidt.

Holland played briefly against the Vikings and was in camp with the 49ers last year. He’s a practice squad veteran of the Dolphins and Buccaneers and will see a number of reps on Thursday as much of the starters will be resting.

Schmidt was claimed today by the Cleveland Browns after averaging 50.3 yards on four punts and blasting every kickoff into the end zone.

The 49ers will finalize their 53-man roster on Aug. 31 and announce their practice squad on Sept. 1.
