The San Francisco 49ers displayed solid defense while uncovering some depth behind Colin Kaepernick in Friday’s 15-13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Phil Dawson made all three of his field goal attempts including two 55-yarders. Seventh-rounder B.J. Daniels hit undrafted rookie Chuck Jacobs for a 14-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the 49ers the lead.
The Chiefs scored on a 104-yard kickoff return by Quintin Demps and two Ryan Succop field goals.
Parys Haralson blocked and recovered a Dustin Collquit punt in the third quarter that the 49ers turned into three points.
Sixth-rounder Nick Moody led the team with 10 solo tackles. Michael Wilhoite was solid against the run, pass, and on special teams.
The defense allowed only 137 passing yards and recorded six sacks, three on Chiefs starter Alex Smith.
Perrish Cox had two sacks while outside linebackers Haralson, Corey Lemonier, Cam Johnson, and nose tackle Mike Purcell had one each.
Colton Schmidt nailed all of his kickoffs into the endzone and boomed three punts for a 43.7 average including a 62-yarder.
Darcel McBath made a touchdown-saving tackle on Demps following a blown punt coverage.
Colin Kaepernick played one series. Frank Gore ripped a 52-yard run on his first carry of the preseason.
Veteran wideouts Chad Hall, Lavelle Hawkins, and Austin Collie combined for five catches for 70 yards in limited action.
Jewell Hampton was the workhorse for the night, rushing 19 times for just 33 yards behind the backup offensive line while catching two passes for 17 yards.
Like Gore, Marcus Lattimore, and D.J. Harper, Hampton also has suffered multiple knee injuries. Seeing him on the field for an extended period of time was encouraging.
A.J. Jenkins slipped twice, missed a block, and tied a career-high zero catches in a game when he played the second most snaps of any receiver.
Jenkins has zero confidence and is simply progressing too slowly for a first-round pick. Every other receiver including Jacobs is ahead of him.
Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien looked like guys who’ve been failed starters and permanent reserves.
McCoy threw 3-of-6 passes for 35 yards and an interception, while Tolzien was just 3-of-8 for 30 yards.
There were no injuries to report from the game.
The 49ers entered tonight’s game needing to see which quarterback would step up. After three quarters of game management, Daniels was finally put under center.
Daniels quickly upstaged McCoy and Tolzien in his first NFL game action, completing 6 of 9 passes for 72 yards including the game-winning touchdown while rushing four times for 13 yards.
It’s only preseason, but it appears the 49ers found a seventh-round steal.
Daniels is as versatile a player as there is; he’s already lined up at wide receiver, halfback, gunner, and kick returner against the Broncos.
Feelings for McCoy and Tolzien are understandable, but don’t be surprised if “the real Swiss Army knife” ends up as Kaepernick’s backup for Week One.
