The 49ers will be without one of their most versatile players for their Week One matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
Shortly after head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke to the media on Wednesday, the team announced that defensive lineman/tight end Demarcus Dobbs has been suspended for one game for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Details regarding the suspension have not been disclosed, but the 25-year-old is eligible to return to the roster on Sept. 9. In the meantime he is able to practice and participate in preseason games.
Last November, Dobbs was arrested for marijuana possession and DUI suspicion following a car accident in Santa Clara and subsequently missed the next game.
General manager Trent Baalke released a statement today saying:
“The San Francisco 49ers organization supports the NFL’s code of conduct policy and their recent decision regarding Demarcus.”
Dobbs has been the primary backup the defensive end Justin Smith this off-season. He originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia in 2011.
The rare two-way player recorded seven tackles in 24 games over two years — while developing into a dependable blocking tight end.
Dobbs finished 2012 on injured reserve with a right knee problem.
