Disgraced Jew living in Tenderloin halfway house

Former San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew — who was sentenced to federal prison for extortion and bribery — is out of prison and is living in a halfway house in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood.

KPIX-TV reports it reached Jew by phone at the halfway house on Monday but that he told the station that he was not allowed to do any media interviews until he completes the terms of his sentence next year.

Jew was in office for only a few months in 2007 when he was accused of extorting thousands of dollars from the owners of tapioca drink shops who were having permit problems with The City.

Prosecutors said at the time after investigating complaints that Jew was shaking down the owners — mostly Chinese immigrants — he was caught on tape in an FBI sting accepting a $40,000 cash bribe.

After pleading guilty to mail fraud, bribery and extortion, during his 2009 sentencing Jew was admonished by the judge and ordered to serve a longer sentence — five years and four months — than prosecutors were asking for.

KPIX says Jew will remain at the halfway house for several more weeks before he finishes out his sentence in home detention.
