As expected, the 49ers announced two roster moves in order to add wideouts Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins just prior to the start of Friday’s practice in Santa Clara.
Undrafted rookie free agents punter/place kicker Colton Schmidt (UC Davis) and center Sherman Carter (Tennessee State) were waived at 5 p.m.
Carter signed on May 7 and Schmidt signed on July 15.
Both players were long-shots to make the 53-man roster given the talent already present at those positions.
Schmidt was in camp to take reps from All-Pro punter Andy Lee while Carter was buried on the depth chart behind Pro Bowler Jonathan Goodwin along with veterans Daniel Kilgore, Adam Snyder, and Joe Looney.
Today’s move improved the odds for Snyder and Looney to make the team.
For the interim, Collie is wearing No. 6 and Hawkins is donning a No. 4 jersey – the same as Lee – and both were signed to one-year contracts according to the team, but terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Thus with a replenished receiving corps, the competition gets even tougher for the young and the injured as two hungry vets are now in the mix for a limited number of jobs.
