Versatile wideout Hawkins on 49ers radar

Seeking healthy bodies to provide depth for an injury-laden group of receivers, the 49ers will work out former Cal star, CCSF standout and Stockton native Lavelle Hawkins this week, CSN Bay Area reports.

Hawkins, 27, has played his entire five-year career for the Tennessee Titans who picked him in the fourth-round of the 2008 draft.

In 52 career games for the Titans, he totaled 71 receptions for 771 yards and one touchdown while recording 12 special teams tackles and handling kick return duties during his rookie year and last season for a 29.3 average.

The 5-11, 194-pound Hawkins was coming off his best pass catching season as the Titans No. 3 receiver in 2011 – 47 receptions for 470 yards – when he missed nine games in 2012 due to ankle problems.

He signed with New England in May after being cut by the Titans, but on Wednesday the Patriots released him.

The 49ers will also work out concussion-prone veterans Austin Collie and Laurent Robinson Friday. Hawkins could be an intriguing option considering his health – no concussions – and versatility.

Collie and Robinson, though, are established starters when healthy, and no other option has emerged as the 49ers No. 2 receiver in camp, especially with “hamstringers” Kyle Williams, A.J. Jenkins, and Kassim Osgood sidelined; Michael Crabtree (Achilles) and Mario Manningham (knee) are on the PUP list and Brandon Carswell (ACL) is already on injured reserve.
