Giants were ‘never close’ on deadline deals

Giants fans can breathe a sigh of relief: The trade deadline has passed, and Tim Lincecum, Hunter Pence and Javier Lopez are still in orange-and-black uniforms.

Being 11 games under .500 wasn’t enough to make San Francisco Giants GM Brian Sabean go the garage sale route, reportedly saying that the team “retained three guys we want to re-sign.”

Sabean said once the deadline that they “weren’t close” on any trades, and that the offers the team did receive were “embarrassing.”

Reports came out earlier in the week that the team was shopping Lincecum and Pence, although both players expressed early on that they both wanted to stay in San Francisco.

While Lincecum is still set to go through the waiver process in August, Sabean’s previous comments seem to be an indication that the Giants are in fact looking to keep No. 55 on their team.

News that Lopez was getting offers from other clubs poured in right up to the deadline, but it is reported that no other team had prospects worth trading for.
