The Golden State Warriors set an NBA Summer League record with their tenth consecutive win dating back to 2010 as they handled the Milwaukee Bucks 84-72 Tuesday.
Forward Draymond Green didn’t know about the record but was fired up when told about it:
“Lets get it! I didn’t know that, but its great. To have that it just shows how serious our coaching staff is taking this. It’s not just come out and chuck up shots, run around like a chicken with your head cut off on defense. It’s putting in defensive and offensive principles and using them to win basketball games.”
Lance Goulbourne — who spent last season with the Warriors D-League affiliate team in Santa Cruz — just missed having a double-double with his game-high 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors had four other players notch double digits: Kent Bazemore, Ian Clark and Cameron Jones all scored 11 points, while Dwayne Davis added 10.
In a battle of the Joneses, Cameron Jones — Goulbourne’s Santa Cruz teammate — was assigned to guarding the Bucks leading scorer, Dominique Jones. After the Bucks’ Dominique scored 11 points in the first half, Santa Cruz’ Cameron kept him scoreless the rest of the game.
After the game Cameron Jones said that he was trying to play tighter defense and not allow Dominique to drive into the paint:
“I was just getting into him more cause he likes to drive…just wanted to make that emphasis and keep him off the dribble. I’ve been guarding pretty much the best guards on each team, and I’m just doing my best to keep them locked down to minimum points.”
Even though Milwaukee was ready for the Dubs offense, calling out the their plays, Golden State’s defense stopped the Bucks in their tracks. The Warriors forced 21 turnovers and held Milwaukee to just 28.6 percent shooting from the field.
With a perfect Summer League record, the Warriors have the day off Wednesday before jumping into the inaugural tournament Thursday.
Green said he’s looking forward to the tournament-style play and the possibility of being the first to win the Summer League championship:
“Anytime we get an opportunity to win a championship its always fun. I hate losing. Summer League, rec league, whatever it is I want to win games regardless. If I’m on the court, why not win.”
The tournament schedule has not been finalized, but since the Warriors are one of the top ten teams in Vegas, they’ll play on Thursday, the second day of the tournament. Play continues until the championship game on July 22.
