Accused startup scammer arrested in Arizona

Federal agents have arrested a San Francisco man who had been on the run since he was indicted in May on charges alleging he scammed a startup out of nearly $100,000.

The FBI says Bruce Lee Marshall was taken into custody in Mesa, Ariz. on Tuesday by FBI agents and U.S. Marshals.

Authorities had been looking for the 38-year-old Marshall after he was indicted on mail fraud charges but failed to show up in federal court on May 17.

Investigators say Marshall had worked for the software company as an operations engineer when he was asked to select a contractor for computer services and other work.

But, investigators say, instead of finding a legitimate contractor, Marshall set up a bogus company and told his employer that company would do the work.

Marshall allegedly bilked his employer out of the money by billing through the bogus company for work that was never performed between July of 2010 through August of 2011.

The name of Marshall’s employer has not been released.

After making his initial court appearance in federal court in Arizona Tuesday, Marshall will be returned to the Bay Area for prosecution.
