Temper­atures in the 100s broil inland areas

Forecasters say a high pressure front moving slowly over the Bay Area is bringing with it a blast of hot air that will send temperatures soaring past 100 degrees across inland areas during the next few days. But San Francisco and the beaches should be mostly spared from the stifling temperatures.

The National Weather Service says record high temperatures, as hot as 110 degrees in some inland hot spots, are expected over the weekend.

Friday it hit 99 degrees in San Rafael, 100 in Concord and 104 in Gilroy, though none of those were record highs.

For inland areas, forecasters say what they’re describing as “excessively warm to hot days” are expected to be around through late Tuesday. The NWS has issued an “excessive heat warning,” with officials warning people to take it easy, to avoid too much time in the sun and to drink plenty of fluids.

To help avoid the heat Pacific Gas & Electric Co. has opened “cooling centers” across the Bay Area where people could go to escape the heat.

In Pleasant Hill, where it hit 102 Friday, a woman was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after her dog died when she left it in the car.

Thanks to winds blowing off the ocean and a marine layer hanging around the coast, San Francisco’s high Saturday is expected to be a relatively balmy 80.

On Sunday, when thousands of people are expected to attend the city’s gay pride parade, temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s.
