Police in three Peninsula cities are asking for the public’s help in finding a San Francisco man they believe has been breaking into a number of homes dating back until at least early April.
San Mateo, Belmont and Hillsborough police say they have identified 20-year-old Melvin Bellard as the man behind a series of so-called “door knock” burglaries in their cities.
Bellard is believed to be responsible for a April 5 burglary in San Mateo that was interrupted when the resident came home.
By the time San Mateo officers arrived the burglars were gone, but about the same time, police in nearby Hillsborough pursued a car on Interstate 280 believed to be driven by the suspects.
As the car drove north on Interstate 280, the suspects inside threw items out the window the car. The suspects evaded capture by Hillsborough officers, but the car was later found abandoned in San Francisco.
Besides being a resident of San Francisco, police say Bellard has strong ties to the East Bay. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
