Supervisor David Campos wants to be sure the the Tamale Lady, aka Virginia Ramos, aka the San Francisco legend recently booted from Zeitgeist, celebrates her birthday this Friday in style.
During the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday — where everything from cuts to San Francisco health care to mayoral reappointments were discussed — Supervisor Campos made a point of maintaining solidarity with the Tamale Lady:
“We’re doing everything we can to make sure the Tamale Lady stays in business.”
After a short tale about Ramos’s upbringing in Mexico where she learned to cook her famous tamales, Campos noted that the Tamale Lady has fallen on hard times.
The Department of Public Health doesn’t want her selling food without a license, and Zeitgeist, her usual haunt, announced last week that Ramos was banned from selling her famous delights at their bar.
Dubbed Our Lady of Tamales by drunken partiers in the Mission, Ramos always seemed to appear when she was needed most. Perhaps that’s why Supervisor Campos decided he’d lend her a hand:
“She has in her own right, become an institution.”
Campos encouraged everyone to come out and celebrate the Tamale Lady’s birthday Friday evening at 7 p.m. at SF Eagle, located at 398 12th Street in SoMa.
