Disgraced Shirakawa facing more jail time

Former Santa Clara County Supervisor George Shirakawa Jr. is facing the prospect of more time in jail after prosecutors filed new charges against him.

Shirakawa is already looking at up to a year in jail in a sentencing set for Friday. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to a series of charges, including perjury and misappropriation of public funds.

During a press conference Wednesday, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said he will seek more jail time after his office filed false impersonation charges against the disgraced former supervisor.

The new charges come after investigators say they found Shirakawa’s DNA on the stamp of an illegal political hit piece mailer that was sent out during a San Jose city council race in 2010.

Shirakawa had denied having anything to do with the mailer, but investigators say DNA on the stamp matched a separate sample collected from Shirakawa when he was charged in the perjury case.

The race involving the mailer was between former Shirakawa aide Xaviar Campos and Magalena Carrasco. Campos won the District 5 supervisor seat in a tight race.

It was not clear what impact, if any, the new charges would have on Shirakawa’s sentencing on Friday.
