Teacher’s nude photo leads to child porn charges

A San Leandro High School teacher is facing child pornography charges after authorities say he mistakenly displayed a nude picture of himself to a class he was teaching.

Court documents show that Richard Styner was showing students in a computer class on April 16 how to transfer electronic images from one device to another when he inadvertently displayed the image.

Styner reported the incident to school officials, but court documents say a subsequent search of his computer turned up 200 pornographic stories and what were described as “disturbing” images.

A spokesman for the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office says after police investigated, the 45-year-old Styner was charged last month with possession of child pornography and with residential burglary.

Prosecutors say the burglary charge comes after Styner allegedly entered a home of friend when she was out of town in October of 2012 and photographed some of her personal items and took some clothing.

The friend — who has not been named — had given Styner a key to her home to be used in an emergency.

Styner has not been arrested in the case, but prosecutors say he has been ordered to appear in court next week.

San Leandro Unified School District Superintendant Cindy Cathey says the district is conducting a separate investigation into the matter.
