A 63-year-old San Francisco man died while competing in a race on Mt. Diablo organizers call the “ultimate trail run.”
Officials say Rene Brunet was running down the mountain in the Mt. Diablo Trail Run around 8:30 a.m. Sunday when he disappeared from the race. A sheriff’s deputy says Brunet was later found down a side of an embankment at the 2,000 foot level.
It’s not known if Brunet died in a fall or if other factors contributed to his death. An autopsy was being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The competition is actually three separate runs, with the shortest distance just under five miles. A run of 15-1/2 miles takes runners to the top of the 3,849-foot high mountain, while the longest run — 31 miles — has runners taking two loops to the summit, according to the organizer’s website.
It was not clear what distance Brunet was running.
