CITY HALL — Despite his scoring exactly zero of his 4,941 NBA points within its city limits, San Francisco honored Stephen Curry with a key to The City and a day dedicated to the Golden State Warriors.
It’s been a season like no other for Curry, who broke records, made his first playoff appearance, and carried the Warriors to just their second playoff appearance in 19 years.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee donned an extremely loud blue blazer and gold tie to present Curry with a key to The City while proclaiming May 21, 2013 Warriors Day in San Francisco.
Lee praised the Warriors’ achievements this season, along with Curry’s league-leading 54 point game against the New York Knicks and single-season record of 272 three-pointers made:
“The entire San Francisco Bay Area is so proud of our Golden State Warriors. Our home team basketball heroes finished a truly amazing season.”
Tim Roye, Warriors radio play-by-play announcer for KNBR, served as master of ceremonies at San Francisco City Hall during an event attended by several hundred fans, officials and media.
Before showing a video clip of highlights, Roye told the crowd that Curry is the kind of player that a broadcaster lives for:
“When I got into the business I never thought I would use the words sick, ridiculous, are you kidding me, unbelievable. But this gentleman over here has made that a normal thing for me, because what he does on the basketball court some people can only do in video games.”
Hall of fame Warrior Nate Thurmond, Golden State legend Al Attles and rookie Kent Bazemore had front row seat for the presentation. Curry’s wife Ayesha and daughter Riley also attended in support of the sharp-shooting point guard.
Curry was also acknowledged for his off-court contributions. Curry has worked with the Tenderloin Community School, and a student from TCS took to the podium to present Curry with the award for NBA Western Conference Player of the Month for April. Curry is the first Warrior to receive the award since Chris Mullin.
Not long before Curry received the key to The City, his moment was overshadowed by the announcement from Mayor Lee that Superbowl L had been awarded to San Francisco.
The spotlight was soon turned back on Curry, who accepted the award and his key with extreme humility. He thanked Mayor Lee, everyone in the Warriors front office and, of course, Bay Area fans:
“I grew up in the NBA, my dad played in Charlotte. So I’ve seen a lot of organizations and a lot of fan bases, but in all of my 25 years of life this is the best fan base by far. So keep those yellow shirts crispy and ironed, bottle up that energy, because come next October we’re gonna start right back on another mission.”
After the ceremony Curry tweeted more thanks to the Bay Area for its continued support:
