UPDATE Sun. 1:46 p.m. The five women killed were on their way to a bachelorette party in Foster City, and the bride to-be was among those killed, the Mercury News reports.
A Saturday night limousine ride turned horrifically tragic for nine women when the stretch Town Car they were riding in burst into flames on the San Mateo Bridge.
Four women and the driver escaped the blaze, but five others were trapped in the car and were confirmed dead on the scene.
The deadly scenario unfolded just after 10 p.m. in the westbound direction of the decline section, when the CHP began receiving reports of a car fire on the bridge, the Mercury News reported.
Exactly how or where the fire started is unclear, though viewer photos posted by KTVU and NBC Bay Area show a white Lincoln Town Car pulled to the side of the road with the back of the limousine fully engulfed in flames.
KGO-TV reported the women were in their 30s, but no other details were made available pending notification of their families. CHP officer Amelia Jack told KGO-TV:
“We have no idea right where they were going or where they were coming from.”
The four survivors are being treated at Stanford Hospital and Valley Medical Center for burns and smoke inhalation. The driver escaped uninjured.
