City pushes to create 6,000 youth jobs

Are you between the ages of 14 to 24 years old? Are looking for something to do this summer? Well has Mayor Ed Lee got a deal for you: A job!

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has challenged The City and local businesses with creating at paid jobs and internships for youth this summer.

While the Summer Jobs+ initiative created 5,204 for youth last year, Lee wants to provide at least 6,000 jobs this year. He said at a City Hall news conference:

“The commitment is from the very top of this city to embrace all of the youth and what they want to do for their future.”

Several city departments, like the Recreation and Park Department, and nonprofits like The United Way of the Bay Area, have already agreed to hire hundreds of youth this summer.

The United Way of the Bay Area CEO Anne Wilson said:

“We’re proud to again be partnering with Mayor Lee and employers throughout San Francisco on Summer Jobs+ 2013. No Mayor or city in America is doing more to get our young people into good jobs and internships for the summer; a critical stepping stone that will help set them on the path to success.”

Employers from companies like Salesforce.com, Starbucks, Advent, Bank of America, and Jawbone have already pledged to create summer jobs for San Francisco youth.

According to the mayor’s office, roughly 1,700 of the 5,204 jobs created last year were from 86 private sector companies, while another 3,500 received jobs through The City.
