Man in custody after double homicide, standoff

A double-homicide early Sunday morning led to a really long standoff between police and the residents of one Oakland home.

According to police, Oakland’s SWAT team surrounded the three-story house on the 1400 block of 25th Avenue after gunshots were fired around 1:20 a.m. With one victim pronounced dead and another seriously injured, the standoff lasted approximately eight hours — with some reporting up to 11 hours.

Shortly after noon, police declared the standoff over.

While one suspect was arrested, at least six others surrendered and are now being interviewed by police. The suspect’s identity has not been released, nor has the victim who died from a gunshot wound to the neck. Police say they do not know what incited the violence.

This is Oakland’s 18th homicide of the year.
