7×7 celebrates 2013 Eat + Drink winners

Story and photos by Elena Kadvany

Oscars, who? How about 7×7’s annual Piggy Awards, handed out to the latest and greatest city eateries Monday night at Anchor Steam Brewery in Potrero Hill.

This year’s winners included an eclectic range, from San Francisco culinary classics, such as Slanted Door (Best Vietnamese) and Gary Danko (Best Service) to the less expected, such as Straw (Most Unique) and Lers Ros (Best Thai).

Many winners are repeat offenders: Slanted Door has claimed Best Vietnamese for years, as has Zuni Cafe for Best Classic. Ichi Sushi in Bernal Heights swooped up Best Japanese for the second year in a row.

Erin Archuleta, Ichi co-owner, told SFBay:

“We’re thrilled and honored to received the 2013 7×7 Eat + Drink Award. It’s especially meaningful, because we feel so lucky to have the best customers who have supported us over the past two years.”

Craftsman & Wolves, opened last June in the Mission, knocked out tried and true favorite Tartine Bakery for Best Dessert.

The City’s best newbie? State Bird Provisions, which opened on New Years Eve in 2011.

Representatives from most of the restaurants attended the awards party on Monday night to schmooze, booze and pick up their bronze Piggy Award.

The 7×7 Eat + Drink Awards are determined by readers, who had from the end of November until January 30th to vote for their favorite restaurants via the magazine’s website.

Categories vary from the usual “bests” – Best Burger, Best Cocktail, Best Brunch, Best Desserts – to ones like Best Meal Under $15, Best Decor and Best Food Truck.
