Pedestrian dies after being struck by Muni bus

An elderly woman who was struck by a Muni bus Saturday afternoon near Lake Merced has died from her injuries.

The 72-year-old pedestrian was hit shortly before 4:30 p.m. by an outbound 18 46th Avenue Bus as it turned from John Muir Boulevard onto Lake Merced Boulevard.

Muni spokesman Paul Rose said the woman’s injuries did not appear to be life threatening; however, family members told ABC 7 News that they authorized a “do not resuscitate” form for her serious injuries.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was hit by the bus’s back half while she was in the crosswalk, Rose told Bay City News.

UPDATE: 10:47 p.m. SFBay commenter broberts says he witnessed the aftermath of the incident from the next bus stop, and reports seeing the victim on the ground in front of the bus after the incident and when paramedics arrived on the scene.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation as the Muni driver is questioned and undergoes standard drug and alcohol testing.

  • I am pretty sure that the front of the bus hit her. I was at the next bus stop that bus was suppose to stop at and saw what had happened about 10 seconds after. The lady was on the ground in front of the bus.
