Meat Week not for the meat meek

If you’re looking for a good excuse to drop your New Year’s diet resolution, we’ve got one for ya.

Sunday marks the beginning of an eight-day descent into vegetarian hell — otherwise known as Meat Week — in the Bay Area.

A celebration of all meats smoked and grilled, the festivities are not without cause. By Superbowl Sunday, the public will crown a restaurant for best barbecue in the greater 7×7 — an achievement that SOMA’s CatHead’s BBQ took home last year.

Each night, you and your finest pair of elastic waist pants get to visit a different barbecue joint. At the end, judge upon categories like Best Sauce, Best Service, Best Sides, Best Atmosphere and Best All-Around.

In San Francisco, the dinner bell rings at 5 p.m. on Sunday at CatHead’s BBQ. Other stops during the week include Haight’s Memphis Minnie’s Bar-B-Que Joint & Smoke House, Mission’s Baby Blues BBQ and Marina’s Cedar Hill.

The weeklong event will end with an outdoor feast catered by City Smokehouse in Alamo Square.

Outside The City, participants include Los Altos’ Armadillo Willy’s BBQ & Cafe, Palo Alto’s Sliderbar Cafe and Mountain View’s New Mongolian BBQ.

Meat Week began in Florida in 2005, and has since spread nationwide — and even overseas — to more than 25 cities.
