Chiu earns third term leading SF Board

David Chiu was re-elected president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Tuesday. It will be his third term as president – a position determined by board members – since he was elected in November 2008.

Chiu retained his District 3 seat on the board in the November 2012 election. He, along with other winning board members, was also sworn-in Tuesday.

In his inaugural speech, Chu told the crowd assembled in the board chambers:

“One of the amazing things about this class of supervisors … is how incredibly diverse we are.”

Also in his speech, Chiu mentioned his fellow board members’ varied backgrounds and his own family’s emigration to the United States from Taiwan.

Chiu also spoke about public safety, environmental sustainability and his hopes to reverse “family flight” from San Francisco.

Chiu is a 15-year resident of District 3, which includes North Beach, Chinatown, Polk Street and the Financial District. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, a former civil rights attorney and prosecutor for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

Before serving on the board, he was Chief Operating Officer at communications technology company Grassroots Enterprise.
