Yes, it’s still early. But “We Believe” is being given new life this season, as the Golden State Warriors start to look like a team with a real chance of making the playoffs.
The Warriors return home this week from a red-hot 6-1 road trip that included a dramatic win over defending NBA champions the Miami Heat.
The good news didn’t stop there, as Golden State big man David Lee was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday. In four games last week, Lee averaged 28.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists.
Lee posted at least 20 points and 11 rebounds in all of the Warriors recent seven road games, the longest points-and-rebounds double-double streak in the NBA this season.
The nods seem to keep coming for the Warriors in what seems like a breakout campaign. Four Golden State players are listed on this season’s All-Star ballot — David Lee, Andrew Bogut, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson — though their vote totals lag well behind perennial fan favorites.
There has even been chatter around the league about Stephen Curry entering the run for MVP. LeBron James wouldn’t go quite that far, though he did praise Curry to Bay Area News Group’s Marcus Thompson II before their game last week:
“He’s definitely MVP for that team, for sure. … And with the way that they’re playing as a team, he’d get a few votes, of course.”
The Warriors’ 16-8 record has earned them second place in the Pacific Division, behind only the also-hot Clippers. No doubt head coach Mark Jackson hopes to add two more wins this week with matchups against the last-place New Orleans Hornets and Sacramento Kings back-to-back Tuesday and Wednesday night.
