A 14-year-old Vallejo boy is being charged as an adult for allegedly kidnapping a 65-year-old woman at gunpoint before beating and raping her and leaving her unconscious in a ditch.
Kaviar King faces charges of assault, armed robbery, attempted murder, carjacking and kidnapping for ransom in connection with the Nov. 15 attack.
Vallejo police say the woman was walking to her minivan in the Gateway Plaza shopping center parking lot around 5 p.m. when King confronted her with a gun.
According to Vallejo Police Lt. Jim O’Connell, King forced the woman to drive him to a location a few miles away from the parking lot, where he physically and sexually assaulted her.
Passers-by discovered the victim in a ditch near Hiddenbrooke Parkway and Interstate 80. O’Connell said she was hospitalized and expected to recover.
Police said that during the abduction, one of the victim’s relatives received a phone call from somebody demanding money in exchange for her safe return.
Police said the boy drove the minivan back to the parking lot, where a witness said King asked a Toys “R” Us employee if she would like to go with him to see the new Twilight film, Breaking Dawn – Part 2.
When the employee declined his offer, the witness said chaos ensued shortly after King entered the store and employees began yelling to call 911 and lock the store doors:
“A bunch of police come running in through the door and you hear a bunch of stuff going on in the back of the store, shuffling and stuff and after a while they handcuff the kid and brought him forward.”
King was booked at Solano County Juvenile Hall and made his first appearance in court last Monday. His public defender asked Solano County Superior Court Judge Wendy Getty to reschedule the arraignment to allow the defense more time to prepare before possibly entering a plea.
King reappeared in court on Monday, but the judge rescheduled the arraignment for Dec. 3.
Authorities said that if convicted as charged, King would be held in juvenile custody until he is transferred to adult prison at age 21.
