The 2012 baseball season might have concluded a couple weeks ago, but the accolades are just beginning to roll in for San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.
Posey was awarded a Louisville Silver Slugger Award Thursday in a ceremony broadcast live on MLB Network. Posey was one of nine players that won the honor for the first time in their careers.
Following the All-Star break in July, Posey went on an explosive offensive hot streak that carried through the end of the regular season. While his bat might have cooled off during the postseason, his grand slam off of Mat Latos in Game 5 of the NLDS was essential in pushing the Giants past the Cincinnati Reds.
Posey led the Giants with 24 home runs, 103 RBIs, 39 doubles, a .408 on-base percentage and .549 slugging percentage in 2012.
Oh, and he led the league with his .336 batting average.
How he’s still only a contender for the 2012 NL MVP is beyond me.
The Silver Slugger, voted on by managers and coaches, awards the best hitters from both leagues at every position. Other NL winners include MVP contenders Pittsburgh Pirate Andrew McCutchen and Milwaukee Brewer Ryan Braun, who won his fifth Silver Slugger.
The winner of the 2012 MVP Award for both leagues will be announced Thursday, November 15.
