Plans for the proposed Warriors arena at Piers 30-32 were unveiled on Monday, giving us all an preview look at their new home.
So believe it or not — because, heck, I didn’t believe it would actually come to fruition — the Golden State Warriors are going to pack up shop at the Oakland Coliseum and get a swanky new play space on the other side of the Bay Bridge.
CBS-SF reports that the plans for the proposed arena were unveiled on Monday, giving us all a preview look at what their new home at Piers 30-32 might look like.
That’s right, sports fans. Piers 30-32. Right off the Embarcadero. On your way to AT&T Park.
As you might imagine, some businesses surrounding the piers and the neighboring San Francisco Giants are not too thrilled with the idea of parking the Warriors new home so close to the already-established baseball park.
Residents and businesses of the South Beach-Rincon Hill area have already held meetings to voice their concerns over the amount of traffic and congestion having the basketball team in town might cause.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is already at work looking at possible ways that the influx of 16,000 to 19,000 hoops fans might cause problems.
Surprise surprise, the Warriors don’t appear to think congestion is going to be an issue. Warriors president and CEO Rick Welts said:
“I think people will be a little bit surprised that we’ve not built more on the site. But I think it is in proportion to what should be on that site.”
Heck, if I was itching to get the heck out of the ancient coliseum, I might say something similar. But residents have every right to be concerned. Traffic is already insane after a Giants game; what’s going to happen in the spring on a night when both teams play?
Or even worse: When pre-season hoops runs into football and — potential — post-season baseball?
