Doors closing on Cafe Cocomo

So, is it just us, or are some of San Francisco’s well-known or go-to hot spots being threatened with eviction?

It might seem that way, what with the Gold Dust Lounge and the Lusty Lady already making headlines. Now, sadly, Cafe Cocomo might not be far behind.

The salsa club, which has been in Dogpatch on Indiana between 18th and 19th for over a decade, received its own eviction notice August 1. CBS-SF reports the club’s owner hasn’t paid rent in “at least a year,” Superior Court records show.

Salsa dancers that frequent Club Cocomo were told that the club “would be closed for a few weeks for repairs.” Now, enthusiasts are wondering if the club will close for good.

The closure has also affected weekly food-&-dance event Taste Fridays, which has posted on its website that “due to a temporary club closure completely out of our control, Taste Fridays will be closed until further notice.”

And sadly, Cocomo isn’t the first salsa joint to see its doors close this year. The Grand, located on Fourth Street in SoMa might still be open as a night club, but halted salsa nights in early 2012.

That’s not to say that there aren’t other spots in the city to get your salsa on. Dancer Takeshi Young tells CBS-SF that Rockit Room on Clement, Impala on Broadway, and El Valenciano in the Mission all host salsa nights.

Cafe Cocomo is linked to several Bay Area-based salsa websites — such as SalsaByJake.com — who’ve had to cancel already-scheduled events due to the closure.

The club also hosted the Bay’s version of the infamous Burning Man decompression in years past, featuring food and dance until all hours of the night. There is no word yet on where the event will be held now that Cafe Cocomo isn’t expected to be operating.
