The darker side of Outside Lands

San Francisco’s own Outside Lands festival came to a close Sunday night after three days that included some 200,000 attendees, a slew of over-priced booze, and a pop-up performance in the woods courtesy of one Jack White.

Unfortunately, the weekend has also drudged up three reports of sexual assault.

San Francisco police are investigating three seemingly unrelated assault reports made by three different women who attended the festival, the Oakland Tribune reported Wednesday.

Police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi told the Tribune that “sexual assaults at the festival are rare,” and that there isn’t any belief thus far that the three instances are related.

The SFPD will continue talking to concert-goers and interviewing the three women to complete their investigation, Manfredi said.

It’s possible that assault reports are so rare because the festival itself is still relatively new. The festival’s first installment was in 2008, and featured Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers as the Sunday headliner.

The Outside Lands festival saw a record number of attendees over the three-day run that included performances from Jack White, Stevie Wonder, Metallica, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and a number of indie rock favorites. The concert spanned five stages spread out inside Golden Gate Park.
