When Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey joins the rest of the Silver & Black up in Napa for training camp, he should probably stick to the speed limit to keep himself out of any more trouble.
The NFL wide receiver plead no contest Monday to a misdemeanor DUI charge he picked up in April. The plea was entered in exchange for three years of probation, three months of DUI classes and “various fines and fees,” CBSLocal.com reports.
Heyward-Bey was pulled over on the Bay Bridge at 2 a.m. on April 7 for speeding and swerving. He was arrested on the scene with a blood-alcohol level of .13 percent — well above the legal limit — according to prosecutors.
His attorney, Ivan Golde, told Judge Samuel Feng Monday that his client would “like to put this behind him,” and that seeking a trial — which Golde had initially seemed to be leaning towards — would “be an undue hardship” to a professional football player needing to focus on the upcoming regular season.
Golde changed his tune from an earlier statement indicating that he had “serious issues” with the case.
Heyward-Bey posted a career-high 64 receptions for 965 receiving yards for the Oakland Raiders last season, putting him atop the 8-8 Oakland team’s receiving class for 2011.
