Oakland Raider Darrius Heyward-Bey didn’t say much at his court hearing Thursday.
CBSLocal reports that the 25-year-old wide receiver did not answer any of the press’s questions outside the courthouse where he was present for his pretrial conference for misdemeanor DUI charges.
The charges are referring to the incident on April 7th in which CHP pulled Heyward-Bay over for speeding and swerving down the freeway on his way back to the East Bay from San Francisco. Prosecutors said in court that his blood alcohol level was .13 at the time he was pulled over.
Heyward-Bey’s attorney, Ivan Golde, addressed the media, saying he believes there was an error in the toxicology report. He entered a plea of not-guilty for his client at an arraignment hearing held on May 31st.
Golde also insists that Heyward-Bey get “a fair shake” when they meet back in court at the end of July, even though the wide out is due at Raiders training camp at the same time.
“We want to be sensitive to the Raiders and Mr. Heyward-Bey, they have training camp coming up,” Golde acknowledged to the media.
Heyward-Bey led the Raiders last year with 64 receptions for 975 yards and four touchdowns. He was drafted by Oakland in 2009 with the seventh-overall draft pick, a slot which critics and fans alike thought Oakland would use to draft now-SF 49er Michael Crabtree. Heyward-Bey has a career-total 99 receptions for 1465 yards and six touchdowns.
