We’ve all seen selfish pet owners leave their dogs in cars while they run into the supermarket or the mall or wherever they choose while abandoning their living, breathing co-pilots.
But has anyone ever walked by a parked car and seen someone has left their infants locked inside without supervision?!
Such was the case last February, when 46-year-old Amanda Nejat from Danville left her 11-week-old twins in the car while she shopped at Nordstrom.
Inside Bay Area reports today that, as part of a agreement reached between the prosecution and the defense, Nejat will be barred from leaving her children unattended and from the Nordstrom at Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton.
On the afternoon of February 8, a shopper leaving the mall found two babies crying in a locked Cadillac Escalade and called mall security. When Nejat finally returned to her vehicle, she told police she had just run into the mall to use the bathroom.
Nordstrom security footage showed her returning items and then shopping for at least 40 minutes.
Nejat entered a plea of no contest on Thursday. She was initially charged with two counts of misdemeanor child endangerment, but the second count was dropped as part of her plea bargain.
In addition to being barred from the store, she was fined $1,000 and ordered into parenting classes and individual counseling. She will also give up her right to resist a police search of her house without a warrant.
The twins, a boy and a girl, were released into their father’s custody following the incident, police said. Neither sustained any physical injury.
