Giants’ first sweep comes against Cubs

Ah yes, the Chicago Cubs came to play.

They brought to town the big bat of Alfonso Soriano, their 5-4 record against the Giants from last season, and a bit of a high after putting the smackdown on the Padres in San Diego.

The Giants responded with a four-game series sweep, their first of the season. That’s right, a four-game sweep. And 6-1 for the homestand.

Little history tidbit: The Orange and Black hadn’t swept the Cubs since June 1999 at Candlestick Park.

Now, the G-men are sitting pretty at seven games over .500 and only three games back from their NL-leading uber-rivals, the Dodgers.

To top it off, the offense is still smokin’ with red-hot Angel Pagan extending his home hitting streak to 28 games, and Brandon Crawford contributing an RBI double during Monday’s game.

Melky Cabrera didn’t carry his May hot streak into the end of the series; he went 0-for-4 Monday. But fear not Giants faithful. I suspect the Melk Man will be a full offensive force down in San Diego later this week.

SF’s starting pitching was stellar, with Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, and Barry Zito all pitching into the ninth inning of their respective games.

Today’s pitcher, Ryan Vogelsong, pitched into the seventh without giving up a single walk — a first in 2012 — and snagged his fourth win of the season.

All four pitchers allowed two or fewer runs, with SFGate reporting that this is only the second time since trekking west in 1958 that in the franchises has done such  “since the franchise came West in 1958.”

Now if Timmy can just get a win tomorrow against the Padres…
