After decades in Congress and years leading her party in the U.S. House of Representatives, the future of Nancy Pelosi's leadership is being challenged after a string of stinging political setbacks.
The woman the right wing loves to hate — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — now shares the same honor bestowed upon the likes of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr.: A road in Golden Gate Park named in her honor.
The lazy, lightly-traveled street formerly known as Middle Drive East was renamed Nancy Pelosi Drive Monday to commemorate Pelosi’s public service to San Francisco. In 25 years in Congress, Pelosi (D-San Francisco) has fought the spread of HIV/AIDS, worked to preserve San Francisco landmarks like Crissy Field and the Presidio, and helped expand public transportation.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee told Pelosi and the naming ceremony crowd at Golden Gate Park that the street is aptly-placed:
“It’s very fitting that Nancy Pelosi Drive goes past the AIDS Memorial Grove.”
Though Pelosi has dedicated herself to California politics for the better part of three decades, the first street named after her wasn’t even in the state. Pelosi was honored in 2007 by her hometown of Baltimore when she became the Speaker of the House.
Conservative commenters, as usual, ripped Pelosi relentlessly in comment threads on places like the Washington Examiner. Even admitted supporters of Pelosi took exception with the bold commemoration usually reserved for the dearly departed. Commenter “Renee” chirped on RichmondSFBlog:
“What hubris. And I say this as someone who has always voted for her.”
