SF street art on the small screen

Wouldn’t it be awesome if all the great street art and public installations in San Francisco could talk? Maybe they’d tell you how they got there, who made them, and why – and other interesting things.

An upcoming mobile app aims to make some of that happen, or at least offer you the next best thing.

ArtAround SF, from the developers of ArtAround Washington DC, wants to get on your phone and provide you with a living map of San Francisco’s many beloved murals, burners, wheatpastes, street installations, guerrilla art and more. An Inside Out Museum, if you will.

The app’s developers plan to make SF’s street art scene easier to navigate, comment on, and share with your friends via Facebook, Twitter and, of course, ArtAround SF.

Users will be encouraged to become “community curators” by adding new art to the map, with information, photos and location specifics. Searches can be filtered by type of art, artist name, neighborhood, venue, popularity, selected favorites and others.

The app’s Kickstarter page says:

“We started this project because we realized that although San Francisco is filled with a wide range of rich, crazy, beautiful historically and personally significant works of art everywhere, most days, we all pass right by these pieces without getting to know them.”

The developing duo behind ArtAround SF, Anna Bloom and Laurenellen McCann, are currently trying to raise start-up money for the project on Kickstarter. With 23 days left to get the project funded, they’ve met less than 15 percent of their $25,000 goal.

In the meantime, iPhone users might also want to check out SF Climates, a handy new app from Baker Beach Software. It provides a detailed listing of the temperature, cloud cover, wind speed and chance of precipitation for The City’s 17 different micro-climates.

ArtAround is planned for both iPhone and Android.
