City’s itty bitty redwood grove is no more

Sure, they were the wrong trees in the wrong place. And sure, they were constantly causing expensive damage to the sidewalk and a nearby retaining wall.

But even casual nature lovers have to shed a needle or two over the death by chainsaw of three majestic Sequoia redwoods in The City last week.

The three life-long residents of the Lower Haight were chopped to pieces last week at their  homes on Steiner at Page. Their removal was ordered by The City after a public review and comment process.

Some neighbors voiced support for the trees, but not enough to save them from becoming sawdust.

From the pictures it appears no attempt was made to salvage usable lumber or other resources from the chopped trees.

If you need to get your redwood fix, several grand groves of Sequoia are within a short drive or long bike ride from The City.

Muir Woods in the North Bay, Redwood Regional in the East Bay, and Big Basin in the South Bay all offer magnificent viewing of these massive, stunning trees.
